In March 2017, the African University College of Communications (AUCC) launched the Ama Ata Aidoo Centre for Creative Writing.

The event was attended by more than 200 enthusiasts and featured drumming, dancing and poetry.

The new centre celebrates Ama Ata Aidoo, a remarkable author and one of Africa’s true Ambassadors. At the young age of 15, she decided that she wanted to be a writer and within just four years, she'd achieved that ambition. Encouraged by one of her teacher’s to enter a newspaper short story competition, she discovered she'd won when she saw her name in the newspaper. She wrote her first play while studying literature at the University of Ghana, where she produced her first play. After graduation, she became a university lecturer. In 1982, Ms. Aidoo was appointed Ghana’s Minister of Education. After 18 months as Minister, she resigned from that position and dedicated herself to full-time writing, living and teaching in Zimbabwe and in the USA. She has written several books and has won many literary awards, including the 1992 Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best Book (Africa) for Changes.

We are excited about this new Centre. Visit us soon to learn more!
